“An investor could have done very well over the last 30 years with just a handful of investment decisions. In 1970, a long-term investor should have bought gold, silver, and oil (commodities); in 1980, he should have sold his gold and oil and bought Japanese stocks; then, in 1989, he should have switched out of Japanese stocks into the S&P 500 or, ideally, into the Nasdaq, which he should have sold at the beginning of 2000.”
-Dr. Marc Faber
_ Dear Reader,
It is really not all that difficult to make big money in the stock market. The big money is made in finding major trends in their infancy and riding them out for many years. The major trends are not difficult to find. The difficult part is having an open mind to find the trends and then having the conviction to stay with the trend for many years. Sure there can major interruptions along the way but that is why we are here. We help you find the major trends and assist you in riding out the bumps along the way.
As we head into the new decade, we enter the second half of the current cycle, which began in 1999-2001. While US stocks were the leader in the 1980s and 90s, this cycle is being led by emerging markets and commodities. This leadership should last at least another five to seven years. To be specific, we are especially excited about the potential of commodities.
Take a look at this historical chart of the CRB Index (source: nowandfutures.com).

Note that commodities were in a bear market from 1920 go 1933, a bull market from 1933 to 1951, a bear market from 1951 to 1968, a bull market from 1968 to 1981, a bear market from 1981 to 2001 and now a bull market since 2001 that figures to last another five to seven years.
It is not enough to know to invest in commodities. With superior market timing, risk management and stock selection, an investor can significantly outperform the most generic commodity investment. Let me give you an example. Since 2002, Pan American Silver, a large silver company has gained 619%. Sounds great. It is. But what if you put a small portion of your funds in Silvercorp? or First Majestic Silver? Silvercorp has gained 35,233%! First Majestic 4,788%!
In addition, the commodities sector is broad enough that we never have to be enamored with or chase one particular commodity or group. While most commodity sectors will generally move in the same direction, a few will always offer value at a reasonable price. Simply put, the commodities sector is broad enough that there will always be an opportunity somewhere. We won’t have to chase a commodity or commodity stock that has already gained significantly and carries more risk.

Absolutely Brilliant! Your analysis of the underlying forces behind inflation is brilliant. It is the realization of the “unspoken obvious.” I will pass your article on. Thank you…..Michael
[I]t seems that only you and Mr. Sinclair have identified that hyperinflation is not caused by an economic event but rather stems from a pervasive loss of confidence in the value of the currency….. Congratulations on both your technical and fundamental insights.- Kevin

Your article was to the point, insightful and the best explanation of the forces we’re dealing with economically. Thank you, I’ve been waiting for this article a long time. Thanks again, Barry
